Sun Jan 12 17:11:30 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu’s Robotic Surgery Center a Boon for Patients

**Chennai, January 13, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital (TNGMSSH) in Chennai is celebrating the success of its robotic surgery center, established three years ago at a cost of ₹34.60 crore. Since its inauguration by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on March 15, 2022, the center has performed over 300 robotic surgeries, half of which were for cancer patients.

The center, the first of its kind in the state’s government sector and reportedly unique among state-run institutions in India (excluding central government facilities), offers a range of robotic surgeries across various departments, including surgical oncology, cardiothoracic vascular surgery, urology, and endocrine surgery.

Professor D. Suresh Kumar of Surgical Oncology highlights the advantages of robotic surgery, particularly for cancer patients. The precision, magnification, and 360-degree movement of the robotic arm allow surgeons to access difficult areas, minimize blood loss, and improve tissue handling, leading to faster recovery times and better treatment outcomes. He emphasized the importance of precise removal of cancer-affected lymph nodes, a capability enhanced by robotic surgery.

While similar procedures in private hospitals cost ₹5-7 lakh, the TNGMSSH provides these services free of charge. Associate Professor Deepthi P. of Anaesthesia noted the center’s positive impact on patient recovery, with early mobilization and vigilant monitoring contributing to improved outcomes. The hospital has trained doctors in each relevant department to perform these complex surgeries.
