**Seoul, January 13, 2025** – South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) estimates that over 3,000 North Korean troops have suffered casualties in Ukraine, with approximately 300 deaths and 2,700 injuries, a lawmaker revealed on Monday. The NIS briefing indicated that North Korean authorities may have instructed soldiers to commit suicide rather than be captured.
While captured North Korean soldiers have reportedly shown no interest in relocating to South Korea, the South Korean government stated it would cooperate with Ukraine should a request for repatriation arise. The information comes amid ongoing concerns about the involvement of foreign fighters in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
