**NEW DELHI, January 13, 2025** – The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, is facing criticism over its handling of recent attacks targeting minority communities. After initially dismissing reports of widespread violence as media exaggerations, Bangladesh Police released a report on January 11th acknowledging 1769 incidents. However, the report controversially attributed the majority of these attacks to “political motivations” rather than religious hatred.
Sources in Delhi express strong concern over this characterization. They point out that the government initially denied the attacks altogether, only acknowledging them months later after an investigation spurred by complaints from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Unity Council (BHBUC). While the police report found 1,234 incidents to be politically motivated and 161 false, sources question how “political motivation” can justify violence against minority groups.
The initial reports from December 8th, 2024, indicated a far greater number of incidents – 2200 – since August 5th. The discrepancy between the initial reports and the police findings further fuels concerns about the government’s transparency and commitment to addressing the issue. Delhi sources are demanding accountability, questioning what steps the interim government is taking to bring perpetrators to justice and prevent future attacks. The conflicting figures and the downplaying of the communal aspect of the violence raise serious questions about the credibility of the Yunus-led administration.
