Mon Jan 13 08:08:37 UTC 2025: ## Makar Sankranti 2025 to Coincide with Kumbh Mela’s Inauguration

**Prayagraj, India** – Makar Sankranti, a significant Hindu festival, will be celebrated on January 15th, 2025, coinciding with the commencement of the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. This year, the festival falls a day after the Poush Purnima (full moon) on January 13th, which marks the beginning of the Kumbh Mela.

The auspicious occasion marks the sun’s transition from the Sagittarius to the Capricorn zodiac sign, signifying the beginning of Uttarayan (the northward journey of the sun). Devotees believe this transition brings immense spiritual significance, and the day is considered particularly auspicious for taking a holy dip in sacred rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, Triveni, Narmada, and Shipra. The first royal bath of the Kumbh Mela will also take place on this day, with sadhus (holy men) and devotees participating in large numbers.

Makar Sankranti, also known as Khichdi, is celebrated with special pujas (prayers) dedicated to the Sun God, along with acts of charity and donation. The festival holds immense religious importance in Hinduism and is traditionally observed in the month of Poush. This year’s unique confluence of Makar Sankranti and the Kumbh Mela is expected to draw massive crowds to Prayagraj.
