Mon Jan 13 03:01:41 UTC 2025: ## Iran Holds Nuclear Talks with European Powers Amidst Rising Tensions

**Geneva, Switzerland – January 13, 2025** – Iran is holding consultations with France, Britain, and Germany today, just one week before the anticipated inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. These talks, the second round in less than two months, follow a previous discreet meeting in November and focus on Iran’s nuclear program.

While both Iran and the E3 (European powers) emphasize these are not formal negotiations, the meetings signal continued diplomatic efforts to address concerns about Iran’s nuclear advancements. The renewed urgency stems from Trump’s upcoming return to office. During his first term, Trump pursued a “maximum pressure” policy, withdrawing the U.S. from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal. This led Iran to scale back its commitments under the agreement.

Recent reports highlight Iran’s significant increase in its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, raising alarm bells among European nations. France, in particular, has expressed serious concern, warning of a potential “breaking point.” Iran denies any intention to develop nuclear weapons, maintaining its program is for peaceful purposes.

The E3 have accused Iran of exceeding uranium enrichment levels without civilian justification and have reiterated their commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, even threatening to utilize the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism to reimpose UN sanctions if necessary. This mechanism, however, expires in October.

Despite the tense situation, both Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have expressed a willingness to revive the JCPOA, proposing a formula of building trust in Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirms Iran’s uranium enrichment levels are currently the highest among non-nuclear weapon states, nearing the threshold required for an atomic bomb. The upcoming talks are crucial in determining the future trajectory of Iran’s nuclear program and international relations in the region.
