Mon Jan 13 05:46:00 UTC 2025: **Chennai Residents Rally to Aid Cyclone Fengal Victims Through NGO Goonj**

CHENNAI, January 13, 2025 – In the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal, Chennai residents are demonstrating remarkable community spirit by organizing donation drives to support affected families. Driven by NGO Goonj, these initiatives are collecting and distributing essential goods such as clothing, dry rations, and stationery.

Mangala Chandran, a resident of Alwarpet, opened her home for a successful collection drive, transforming her entrance into a temporary storage facility for donated items. This follows a similar effort by The Little Caterpillar play school in RA Puram, which hosted a Goonj collection drive and upcycled goods sale during the Christmas period. These actions highlight the widespread participation of individuals and institutions in aiding relief efforts.

While numerous drives have been conducted since Cyclone Fengal made landfall on December 1st, Goonj reports a significant need for further assistance. Anisha Baura of Goonj states that while approximately 10 collection drives have taken place, reaching only 3,000 out of a targeted 15,000 families.

Individuals and organizations wishing to host similar drives are encouraged to contact Goonj at least five days in advance for logistical support. Challenges remain, including space constraints and transportation costs, but volunteers are actively using WhatsApp groups to recruit additional support and spread awareness. The success of these initiatives underscores the vital role of community engagement in disaster relief.
