Sun Jan 12 17:20:00 UTC 2025: ## India and China Report Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases Amidst Global Rise in Respiratory Illnesses
**NEW DELHI/BEIJING** – India has reported a rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, with at least 17 confirmed infections across multiple states. Two new cases were reported in Gujarat on Saturday, bringing the state’s total to five. Other affected states include Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry. Meanwhile, China has acknowledged a rise in respiratory illnesses, including HMPV, but emphasized that the virus is not new and has circulated for over 60 years.
Health officials in both countries have stressed that HMPV, while causing cold-like symptoms such as cough, fever, and sore throat, is not a cause for widespread panic. The virus is often self-limiting, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms with over-the-counter medications. Experts advise the public to maintain basic hygiene practices like mask-wearing in crowded areas, regular handwashing, and a healthy diet to mitigate the risk of infection.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the recent increase in HMPV and other respiratory viruses, including RSV and influenza, is typical for this season. Infants, young children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions are considered at higher risk of severe illness. While there is currently no vaccine for HMPV, research is ongoing.
Several Indian states have formed committees to monitor HMPV cases and issue public health advisories. Chinese officials have stated they are in close communication with the WHO regarding the situation. Despite the increased cases, health experts emphasize the importance of remaining calm and taking preventative measures.
