**NEW DELHI** – Veteran Delhi BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht has openly defied his party’s decision to replace him as the candidate for the Karawal Nagar constituency in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Bisht, a winning candidate in all but one election since 1998, strongly criticized the BJP’s selection of Kapil Mishra, claiming it was a “big mistake.”
The BJP announced Mishra as its candidate on Monday, sparking Bisht’s immediate rebuke. Bisht declared he will not contest from any other seat and will file his nomination from Karawal Nagar before the January 17 deadline. He accused the BJP of believing they could field any candidate and win, asserting that only time will tell the outcome in several key constituencies, including Karawal Nagar.
In contrast, Mishra, who previously served as an AAP MLA and Minister before switching to the BJP, expressed confidence in a decisive victory. He attributed this confidence to a perceived wave of support for the BJP across Delhi.
Mishra’s past is marked by controversy. He previously defeated Bisht in the 2015 elections while with the AAP, only to be later expelled from the party following accusations of corruption. His subsequent move to the BJP and his inflammatory remarks regarding anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests further added to his public profile.
The BJP’s choice reflects the party’s ongoing struggle to unseat the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the February 5th elections. The results will be announced on February 8th. Bisht’s defiance presents a significant challenge to the BJP’s election strategy in a key constituency.
