**Mumbai, January 12, 2025** – Devjit Saikia has been elected unopposed as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Saikia, a former Ranji Trophy player for Assam and a lawyer by profession, succeeds Jay Shah, who assumed the role of ICC chairman on December 1st, 2024.

Saikia, 55, served as the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association before taking on this new role. A report in the Indian Express suggests he will serve as BCCI secretary for the next ten months. His cricketing career, which included four Ranji Trophy appearances as a wicketkeeper-batsman, ended in 1991 at the age of 21. He later pursued a successful career in law, serving as a senior standing counsel for the Assam government since 2019 and representing them in the High Court and Supreme Court. He is also involved in the administration of other sports organizations, including the Guwahati Town Club and Guwahati Sports Association.

The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) expressed its delight at Saikia’s election, stating that his experience will further enhance the development of cricket in India. The ACA’s statement highlighted the unopposed election as a testament to the trust and confidence placed in Saikia by the BCCI member boards. Saikia’s background includes a shared education with Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
