Sun Jan 12 08:22:43 UTC 2025: ## National Youth Day Celebrates Swami Vivekananda’s Legacy
**New Delhi, January 12** – India today commemorated the 162nd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, a revered spiritual leader, philosopher, and thinker. Observed as National Youth Day, the occasion is marked nationwide with events aimed at inspiring youth to contribute positively to personal growth and nation-building.
This year, the government organized the “Developed India Young Leaders Dialogue 2025” at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi (January 11-12) to emphasize youth empowerment and leadership. Various competitions, including speech and essay contests, are also held across the country.
Swami Vivekananda, known for revitalizing Hinduism in colonial India and fostering nationalism among youth, is celebrated for his interpretation of Hinduism, which garnered global attention. His teachings continue to inspire millions, instilling enthusiasm and awakening dormant potential. His life, especially his youth, serves as a powerful example for young Indians.
The government designated his birth anniversary as National Youth Day in 1985, recognizing his belief in the youth’s crucial role in a nation’s development. He famously urged young people to believe in their inherent strength and capabilities, a message that remains highly relevant today.
Born into a wealthy family, Vivekananda demonstrated exceptional intelligence and curiosity from a young age. His spiritual journey led him to become a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, after which he became known as Swami Vivekananda. His transformative address at the 1893 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago catapulted India and its spiritual heritage onto the world stage, earning him global recognition.
Speeches delivered on this day often highlight Vivekananda’s powerful message: “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached,” encouraging young Indians to embrace their potential and actively participate in nation-building. The day serves as a reminder of his enduring legacy and a call to action for the youth of India.
