**Varanasi, India –** Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi on Saturday as part of a pilgrimage to the upcoming Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Accompanied by Swami Kailashanand Giri Ji Maharaj of Niranjani Akhara, Ms. Jobs, who was given the name “Kamala,” offered prayers at the temple, observing local traditions by viewing the Shivling from outside the sanctum sanctorum.
Swami Giri explained that this was in keeping with temple customs, stating that only specific individuals are permitted to directly touch the Shivling. The visit, he added, was to pray for a smooth and successful Maha Kumbh. Ms. Jobs plans to participate fully in the Kumbh, including taking a dip in the Ganges River.
The Maha Kumbh, a massive religious gathering held every twelve years, begins January 13th and runs until February 26th in Prayagraj. Preparations are extensive, including a newly inaugurated 20 crore rupee water laser show showcasing the Kumbh’s history, and comprehensive security measures involving AI-powered CCTV, underwater drones, and electric bus transportation. The Uttar Pradesh government is committed to ensuring a safe and grand celebration for the expected millions of devotees.
