Sun Jan 12 04:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Ovechkin Closes In on Gretzky’s Record with Goal Against Predators

**NASHVILLE, Tenn. –** Alex Ovechkin inched closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal-scoring record, netting his 873rd career goal in the Washington Capitals’ 4-1 victory over the Nashville Predators Saturday night. The goal, an empty-netter, came after Ovechkin displayed impressive determination, blocking a shot and skating the length of the ice with less than a minute remaining. He also contributed an assist in the game.

Ovechkin, now just 21 goals away from tying Gretzky’s record of 894, has shown remarkable resilience this season. After suffering a leg injury in November that sidelined him for 16 games, the 39-year-old has resumed his pursuit with vigor.

The Capitals’ victory also saw the NHL debut goal from Ethen Frank, alongside tallies from Tom Wilson and Andrew Mangiapane. Logan Thompson recorded 32 saves for Washington, while Filip Forsberg scored for the Predators, who saw Juuse Saros make 12 saves in their second consecutive loss. Forsberg’s goal marked his second in as many games after an 18-game drought.
