Sat Jan 11 15:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Sugary Drinks Fuel Global Diabetes and Heart Disease Surge: Study
**New Delhi, January 11, 2025** – A new study published in *Nature Medicine* reveals a stark connection between sugary drink consumption and the global rise in type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Researchers estimate that in 2020, 2.2 million new diabetes cases and 1.2 million new cardiovascular disease cases worldwide were attributable to sugary beverages, representing 9.8% and 3.1% of all new cases, respectively.
The study, which analyzed data from 184 countries between 1990 and 2020, found the impact to be particularly severe in developing nations, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. In Latin America and the Caribbean, sugary drinks contributed to nearly 24% of new diabetes cases and over 11% of new cardiovascular disease cases. Sub-Saharan Africa saw sugary beverages contribute to over 21% of new diabetes cases. Colombia, Mexico, and South Africa were highlighted as particularly hard-hit countries.
The researchers attribute the surge to the rapid digestion of sugary drinks, leading to blood sugar spikes and contributing to weight gain, insulin resistance, and metabolic issues. Men and younger adults were found to be disproportionately affected.
The study’s authors advocate for a multi-pronged approach to combat this issue, including public health campaigns, tighter regulations on sugary drink advertising, and taxes on these beverages. Mexico’s 2014 tax on sugary drinks is cited as an example of a potentially effective intervention, showing early signs of reduced consumption, particularly among lower-income groups. The findings underscore the urgent need for global action to address the significant health burden imposed by sugary drink consumption.
