Sat Jan 11 05:43:07 UTC 2025: ## Black Boxes Cut Out Before Fatal South Korea Plane Crash
**SEOUL, South Korea (January 11, 2025)** – The flight data and cockpit voice recorders of a Jeju Air jet that crashed in South Korea on December 29, killing 179 people, stopped recording four minutes before impact, the Transport Ministry announced today. The plane, flight 7C2216, traveling from Bangkok, Thailand, overshot the runway at Muan airport and burst into flames.
The ministry stated that investigators will focus on determining why the black boxes failed. The voice recorder was initially analyzed in South Korea before being sent to a U.S. National Transportation Safety Board laboratory for further examination due to missing data. The damaged flight data recorder was also sent to the U.S. for analysis in cooperation with U.S. safety regulators.
Prior to the crash, the pilots reported a bird strike and declared an emergency approximately four minutes before the aircraft hit an embankment. Two crew members survived with injuries. This is the worst air disaster in South Korean history, prompting authorities to launch a full investigation and announce inspections of Boeing aircraft.
