Sat Jan 11 13:06:10 UTC 2025: ## PM Modi to Inaugurate Z-Morh Tunnel Amidst Tight Security
**Srinagar, January 11, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the strategically important Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on January 13th, triggering a massive security operation across the region. Authorities have confirmed heightened security measures around the tunnel and in surrounding areas, including Srinagar.
The 6.5 km tunnel, built at a cost of ₹2,400 crore, will significantly improve year-round road access to Ladakh. Its opening is considered a major boost for the region’s defence and civilian connectivity. The tunnel, situated at an altitude of 8,650 feet, features a parallel escape passage and cutting-edge technology.
Security personnel, including the SPG, Jammu and Kashmir Police, paramilitary forces, and the Army, have implemented multi-layered security arrangements. Sharpshooters are deployed at key locations, and aerial and drone surveillance is in place. The area surrounding the inauguration venue in Gagangir is currently off-limits to the public. Extensive searches and patrols are underway to ensure a smooth event.
The Srinagar-Leh national highway will be closed from January 11th to 13th, ostensibly due to inclement weather and maintenance, although it’s widely believed this closure is to facilitate the Prime Minister’s visit. This closure comes after a terrorist attack near the tunnel site last October that resulted in seven deaths.
The Z-Morh tunnel, along with the under-construction Zojila tunnel, is expected to greatly enhance connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, benefitting both civilian and military traffic. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has hailed the project as a “game-changer” for the region, boosting trade and tourism. PM Modi is expected to address a public rally following the inauguration.
