Fri Jan 10 04:37:39 UTC 2025: ## India’s Passport Power Weakens: Global Ranking Slides to 85th
**New Delhi, January 10, 2025** – India’s passport has slipped five places in the Henley Passport Index, falling to 85th position globally, according to the latest rankings released by Henley & Partners on Wednesday. This marks a decline from its 80th ranking in 2024 and its lowest position since 2021 when it stood at 90th. Singapore retained its top spot for the second consecutive year.
The Henley Passport Index, based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), considers visa-free access to 227 destinations across 199 passports. The index is widely regarded as a benchmark for global passport mobility.
Neighboring countries also saw changes in their rankings. Pakistan fell to 103rd (from 101st in 2024), and Bangladesh dropped to 100th (from 97th).
The report highlights significant shifts in global passport power. While China experienced a rise in its ranking, moving from 62nd in 2024 to 60th in 2025, the U.S. saw a decline from 7th to 9th. Japan, which held the top spot from 2018 to 2023, now ranks second.
Henley & Partners also noted considerable movement over the past decade. The U.S. experienced the second-largest drop, falling seven places since 2015, while China saw a substantial climb, rising 34 places during the same period. This movement reflects changing geopolitical dynamics and the growing importance of alternative citizenship options for wealthy individuals, according to Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners. The firm noted that U.S. nationals make up the largest group seeking alternative residency and citizenship programs.
