Fri Jan 10 16:33:16 UTC 2025: ## Upgraded Amrit Bharat Trains to Feature Advanced Tech, Says Railway Minister
**Chennai, January 10, 2025** – Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced today that the second iteration of the Amrit Bharat (AB) train set will incorporate several cutting-edge technologies. Following an inspection of the ICF (Integral Coach Factory) in Chennai, where the trains are being manufactured, Mr. Vaishnaw revealed that 50 AB sleeper train sets are planned. These 22-coach trains, capable of reaching speeds of 130 kmph, will feature dual engines and improvements over the first version.
Key upgrades include semi-automatic couplers for easier attachment/detachment, an electronic pneumatic-assisted braking system, and a fully sealed gangway. Passenger comfort will be enhanced with improved toilets featuring sheet moulding compound material, a dedicated Divyangjan (disabled persons) toilet in sleeper coaches, external emergency lights, a passenger information system, and a Tejas-type gangway.
The Minister also confirmed the installation of the anti-crash ‘Kavach’ system in 10,000 locomotives and front-facing cameras on engines. Addressing concerns following the Kavarapettai derailment, Mr. Vaishnaw stated that ICF has developed new, tamper-proof bolts and nuts for improved safety.
Regarding the Pamban Bridge, which recently faced scrutiny from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Mr. Vaishnaw explained that its design, undertaken by international experts, differed from standard RDSO norms, a fact duly communicated to the CRS.
Finally, the Minister announced the cancellation of the proposed Madurai-Thoothukudi new rail line project due to a lack of state government support.
