Sat Jan 11 00:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Assam Police Held Hostage in Nagaland Due to Google Maps Error

**KOHIMA/JORHAT:** A team of 16 Assam Police officers were held hostage overnight in Nagaland after a Google Maps error led them across state borders. The incident occurred while the team, from Jorhat district, was pursuing a suspect. Only three officers were in uniform; the rest were in civilian clothes.

According to police sources, the team, relying on Google Maps for navigation at night, unknowingly crossed into Nagaland. The app incorrectly displayed a tea estate in Nagaland as being within Assam’s borders.

The officers’ presence, coupled with their possession of advanced weaponry, aroused suspicion among local residents who mistook them for criminals. A confrontation ensued, resulting in one officer sustaining injuries before the team was held hostage.

The Assam police contacted Nagaland authorities, who intervened. Following negotiations, the local populace released the hostage officers. The injured officer received medical attention. The incident highlights the potential pitfalls of relying solely on digital maps for navigation, especially in unfamiliar or border areas. The Assam Police are currently reviewing their operational procedures following the incident.
