**Brussels, January 11, 2025** – The European Union has released the first €3 billion installment of a G7-backed loan to Ukraine, providing crucial financial support for the country’s ongoing war effort. This payment marks the EU’s contribution to a $50 billion loan aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s economy and defense capabilities nearly three years into the Russian invasion.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the disbursement on social media, emphasizing the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s fight for freedom. The funds are sourced from interest earned on approximately $235 billion in frozen Russian central bank assets held within the EU, largely managed by Euroclear in Belgium.
The EU’s total contribution to the G7 loan will reach approximately $19 billion, complementing the US’s $20 billion commitment and contributions from the UK, Canada, and Japan. This initiative replaces an earlier EU program that already channeled billions to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets.
The timely financial aid comes as the incoming US administration under Donald Trump expresses potential uncertainty regarding continued American support for Ukraine, adding a layer of complexity to the situation. Ukraine continues to advocate for the seizure and allocation of all frozen Russian assets globally, estimated at $300 billion.
