Sat Jan 11 04:40:22 UTC 2025: ## DMK Announces Candidate for Erode East Bypoll
**ERODE, Tamil Nadu, January 11, 2025** – The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party has officially nominated V.C. Chandhirakumar as its candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Erode East Assembly constituency. The bypoll, scheduled for February 5th, was necessitated by the recent death of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan.
Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin announced the decision following discussions with the Congress party. Despite the seat historically belonging to the Congress, the TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai cited the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections and Mr. Stalin’s leadership of the INDIA bloc in the state as reasons for the unanimous decision to allow the DMK to field a candidate.
Chandhirakumar, a postgraduate in Public Administration and wholesale textile trader, previously served as an MLA for the constituency representing the DMDK before joining the DMK in 2016. He unsuccessfully contested the 2016 Assembly election for the DMK and currently holds the position of the party’s assistant propaganda secretary. His selection follows Mr. Stalin’s attendance at a family wedding reception in Erode on December 19, 2024.
