Sat Jan 11 14:54:43 UTC 2025: ## Wetlands Encroachment Sparks Urgent Action Demand in Kozhikode
**Kozhikode, Kerala, January 11, 2025** – The Sarovaram Mangrove and Wetland Protection Committee has appealed to Kerala’s Revenue Minister, K. Rajan, to address the alleged encroachment of the Kottooly wetlands. A petition signed by nearly 500 local residents highlights significant encroachments near the Sarovaram Bio Park, including land occupied by the Calicut Trade Centre and a recent encroachment behind Markaz International School.
The committee alleges that these encroachments, which are reportedly occurring day and night, threaten the fragile ecosystem and represent a disregard for the law. They further claim that individuals challenging these actions have faced threats. The memorandum criticizes the Revenue Department for its perceived inaction.
The 258-acre Kottooly wetlands, located in the heart of Kozhikode city, are a proposed Ramsar site. The committee stressed the wetlands’ ecological importance, citing numerous state government orders and studies advocating for their conservation. They urged the Minister to ensure that ongoing conservation efforts are completed.
The committee also identified errors in the Kottooly wetlands map published by the State Wetland Authority Kerala and requested immediate corrections. Kozhikode district panchayat vice president P. Gavas echoed the committee’s plea for immediate action. Minister Rajan reportedly responded positively to the concerns raised.
