**Chennai, January 10, 2025** – Director Bala’s latest film, “Vanangam,” starring Arun Vijay, Roshini Prakash, and Rithika, hit theaters today. The film, produced by V House Productions and featuring music by G.V. Prakash Kumar and Sam C.S., clocks in at 2 hours and 2 minutes. While praised for Arun Vijay’s powerful performance, the film has received a mixed response, garnering a 2.75/5 rating.
Critics note that “Vanangam” follows Bala’s signature style, similar to his previous works. The film centers around Arun Vijay, a deaf and mute character with a violent temper, who raises a young orphaned girl (Rithika) after losing his own parents in Kanyakumari. His violent actions lead him to commit a double murder, culminating in his arrest and subsequent release on bail. The narrative revolves around the investigation into his motives.
Arun Vijay’s performance has been lauded as a career highlight, drawing comparisons to Vikram’s character in Bala’s “Pithamagan.” Roshini Prakash’s energetic performance also receives positive mentions, while Rithika’s portrayal of Arun Vijay’s foster sister is deemed impactful, albeit with a somewhat contrived ending. Mishkin and Samuthirakani make special appearances as a judge and police officer, respectively.
However, the film’s soundtrack by G.V. Prakash Kumar is considered a weak point, lacking the memorable songs typically found in Bala’s films. Sam C.S.’s background score is also noted as subdued. While the cinematography by R.B. Gurudev effectively captures the Kanyakumari setting, the film’s relatively simple plot and lengthy scenes are seen as detracting factors. Despite the graphic violence, particularly the depiction of the murders, the film ultimately fails to reach the standard of Bala’s previous successes. The film’s commercial success remains to be seen.
