**Kozhikode, January 3, 2025** – A lecture at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium (RSCP) in Kozhikode shed light on the ongoing quest to understand the universe’s origins and expansion. Astrophysicist P. Ajith of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bengaluru, argued that a combination of Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum physics may be key to explaining the universe’s expansion from a singular entity.
Speaking at the RSCP’s inaugural “Cosmic Snapshots” lecture series on January 2nd, Ajith challenged the widely accepted notion of the “primordial atom,” proposing it as a narrative rather than a scientific certainty. He traced the evolution of our understanding of the cosmos, from Copernicus’s heliocentric model to Galileo’s observations confirming it, and Newton’s laws of motion, which remain relevant in modern rocket science. Ajith further highlighted the contributions of Kepler and Hubble, emphasizing Hubble’s pivotal role in measuring the distances to distant galaxies. Finally, he explained Einstein’s groundbreaking theory of relativity, which redefined gravity as a consequence of the curvature of space-time. Ajith’s lecture provided a comprehensive overview of scientific milestones in understanding the universe, culminating in the suggestion that combining relativity and quantum physics offers the most promising path towards a complete explanation of the universe’s origins.
