**Dharamshala, India** – The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died last month at the age of 100. A state funeral was held for President Carter on January 9th, 2024, at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the head of the CTA, described Carter as “a close friend of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and a towering figure whose life was dedicated to advocating for peace, justice, and human rights worldwide.” He lauded Carter’s courage in addressing human rights abuses, including those suffered by the Tibetan people, and his support for the Dalai Lama’s presence in the United States.

The Sikyong highlighted the shared values between President Carter and the Dalai Lama, emphasizing their mutual commitment to peace and the rights of all people. He noted the significant contributions of The Carter Center to improving lives globally. The CTA held a prayer service on December 30th, 2024, to commemorate Carter’s life and closed its offices in tribute. The Tibetan people, according to the Dalai Lama’s message, remain “forever grateful” for Carter’s concern for Tibet and his efforts to alleviate the suffering of its people.
