Wed Jan 08 11:52:10 UTC 2025: ## Loneliness Linked to Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality: Study

**CHENNAI, INDIA – January 9, 2025** – A new study published in *Nature Human Behaviour* reveals a significant link between loneliness and social isolation and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and mortality. Researchers from Fudan University and the University of Warwick analyzed blood samples from over 42,000 individuals over 14 years. Their findings, published January 3rd, 2025, indicate that loneliness is associated with changes in specific proteins linked to metabolic processes and blood components, ultimately impacting cardiovascular health and lifespan.

The study utilized Mendelian Randomization (MR), a method using genetic variants to establish causal relationships. Researchers identified five proteins whose levels were elevated in lonely individuals. One protein, an inflammatory marker, showed the strongest association with social isolation, while another influenced cholesterol levels. A one-unit increase in one of these proteins correlated with a 58% rise in mortality risk.

While the study strongly suggests a causal link, the researchers acknowledge the limitations of MR studies and call for further investigation with larger datasets to confirm the direct cause-and-effect relationship definitively. The findings highlight the importance of social connection in maintaining overall health and well-being.
