**Washington, D.C. –** Former President Jimmy Carter, the nation’s only centenarian ex-president, passed away on December 29th at the age of 100. In honor of his life and legacy, President Biden has declared Thursday, January 5th, a national day of mourning.

Flags across the country and at U.S. embassies worldwide will be flown at half-staff for 30 days. Federal government offices will be closed on January 5th, except for essential services, with federal employees still receiving pay for the day.
