Fri Jan 10 12:25:10 UTC 2025: ## L&T Chairman’s Remarks on 90-Hour Workweeks Spark Outrage Amidst UN Warnings on Long Working Hours
**Mumbai, India** – Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman and Managing Director SN Subrahmanyan’s recent statement expressing regret over not being able to make employees work on Sundays has ignited a firestorm of criticism. His comments, suggesting a 90-hour workweek, directly contradict warnings from the United Nations about the severe health risks associated with excessive working hours.
A 2021 UN report revealed that long working hours contribute to nearly two million work-related deaths annually, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, strokes, and ischaemic heart disease being leading causes. The report also highlighted numerous other occupational risk factors, including exposure to carcinogens and ergonomic hazards. The World Health Organization (WHO) called the findings a “wake-up call.”
Subrahmanyan’s remarks have drawn condemnation from various quarters, including actress Deepika Padukone, who criticized the statement on social media, emphasizing the importance of mental health. L&T subsequently clarified that the comments reflected the company’s ambition for India’s growth, highlighting the need for “extraordinary efforts.”
However, medical professionals have underscored the detrimental effects of prolonged work hours on both physical and mental well-being. Dr. Bipeenchandra Bhamre, a consultant cardiac surgeon, stressed the importance of work-life balance, particularly in stressful environments, to prevent burnout. Clinical psychologist Shilpi Saraswat noted a significant increase in young adults (25-48 years old) seeking treatment for stress, anxiety, and mental health issues stemming from work-life imbalance and excessive working hours.
Experts recommend strategies for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, including taking regular breaks, practicing mindfulness, implementing stress management techniques, enhancing time management, and seeking help for mental health concerns. The debate highlights a growing global concern regarding the detrimental impact of long working hours on employee health and well-being.
