Fri Jan 10 08:12:46 UTC 2025: ## Japan Strengthens Sanctions Against Russia
**TOKYO, January 10, 2025** – Japan announced significantly expanded sanctions against Russia on Friday, targeting individuals, organizations, and banks involved in supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. The move aligns with the G7’s efforts to increase pressure on Russia and prevent sanctions evasion.
The new sanctions include asset freezes on 11 individuals, 29 organizations, and three banks in Russia, as well as a North Korean and Georgian bank accused of assisting in sanctions circumvention. Furthermore, Japan imposed total export bans on 22 Russian military-related organizations and a broader list of 335 items, effective January 23rd. These items range from construction vehicle parts to communication devices. The restrictions also extend to 31 non-Russian entities across several countries, including Hong Kong, China, and Turkey, alleged to have aided Russia in evading sanctions.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated that these measures demonstrate Japan’s commitment to the G7’s coordinated approach and aim to prevent Russia from strengthening its industrial base with foreign assistance. The sanctions come a month after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirmed Japan’s stance at a G7 summit. The expansion of sanctions reflects growing concern about the war’s potential impact on Asia, particularly in light of China’s stance on Taiwan.
