Fri Jan 10 13:16:08 UTC 2025: ## India on Alert as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases Rise
**NEW DELHI, INDIA** – A rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases across India has prompted health authorities to increase surveillance. The latest confirmed case, an eight-year-old boy in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district, brings the nationwide total to at least eight since January 7th. Gujarat now has three confirmed cases. While the virus is not new and generally causes mild flu-like symptoms, officials are urging caution, particularly for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
The Ministry of Health has advised all states to enhance surveillance for Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses (SARI) and Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI) to detect any surge in respiratory infections. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirms HMPV is already circulating globally and within India.
Pune district authorities have played down widespread panic, stating that while approximately 20 pediatric and 4-5 adult cases with comorbidities were diagnosed in 2023-24, the virus is generally mild. They recommend standard precautions such as handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and consulting a doctor if flu-like symptoms develop. Experts stress that while cloth masks offer some protection, more robust options like surgical masks or N95 respirators are more effective against the virus’s smaller particles.
Although HMPV primarily spreads through respiratory droplets, the recent increase highlights the need for vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate potential outbreaks. The government’s emphasis on heightened surveillance is a prudent step given the virus’s potential to cause severe complications in vulnerable populations.
