Fri Jan 10 11:10:34 UTC 2025: **Ram Charan’s ‘Game Changer’ Opens Big, but Mixed Reviews Emerge**
HYDERABAD, INDIA – Ram Charan’s highly anticipated film, “Game Changer,” directed by Shankar, debuted to a massive box office opening but has received a mixed response from critics and audiences. The film, a commercial potboiler featuring Charan in a dual role alongside Kiara Advani, SJ Suryah, and Anjali, earned an estimated ₹14.66 crore net in India on its first day, with projections exceeding ₹50 crore gross. Advance bookings alone raked in ₹43.55 crore (with block seats) in India and ₹27.6 crore overseas.
Despite the strong opening, reviews have been divided. While some critics like Manobala Vijayabalan lauded the film with a 5/5 rating, praising Charan’s performance and Shankar’s direction, others like Avinash Ramachandran gave it a more moderate 2.5/5, citing inconsistencies in the narrative. Many online reviewers praised Charan’s performance and the film’s visual spectacle, but criticized the screenplay in places and suggested that some scenes could have been trimmed. One trade analyst, Sumit Kadel, called it “one of the most ambitious political dramas made in Indian cinema,” highlighting the gripping flashback sequence. However, audience feedback also expressed a preference for the second half over the first.
The film’s massive budget of ₹450 crore means it needs to surpass ₹221 crore in worldwide share to break even. The success of the film will depend on its continued box office performance in the coming days. Further complicating matters, pirated versions of “Game Changer” are already circulating online on various platforms, potentially impacting its overall revenue.
The film’s release has also been marked by controversy. Following a recent cinema stampede, the Telangana government initially restricted show timings, but later approved increased ticket prices and additional screenings for the film. Additionally, a song, “Naanaa Hyraanaa,” was temporarily removed due to technical issues but is expected to be reinstated soon. “Game Changer” faces competition from other Telugu and Tamil films released during the Sankranti holiday period.
