**Los Angeles, CA** – A catastrophic wildfire has swept through Los Angeles and surrounding areas, causing widespread destruction and claiming at least 10 lives. Over 180,000 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, leaving behind more than 10,000 destroyed structures including homes, businesses, and historical landmarks.
The fire, which reignited Thursday evening, has caused an estimated $135-150 billion in damage, according to AccuWeather. Over 5,000 structures were destroyed in Eaton Canyon near Pasadena alone, with a similar number lost in Los Angeles and Pacific Palisades. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as search and rescue efforts continue amidst hazardous conditions.
The disaster has also sparked a wave of looting, with Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reporting the arrest of approximately 20 individuals since Tuesday. Among the structures lost are five churches, seven schools, two libraries, and numerous businesses including boutiques, bars, restaurants, banks, and grocery stores. Historic buildings like the Will Rogers Western Ranch House and Topanga Ranch Motel have also been completely destroyed.
The intense blaze has been fueled by strong winds, making it extremely difficult for firefighters to contain. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that Thursday evening’s gusty conditions significantly worsened the situation. Schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest in the US, remain closed until conditions improve.
In response to the crisis, the California National Guard has been deployed, and Governor Gavin Newsom has emphasized the ongoing efforts to ensure public safety. President Joe Biden has pledged federal assistance, calling the fire one of the most extensive and destructive in California’s history. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
