Wed Jan 08 18:38:57 UTC 2025: ## Naga Tribe Condemns Kuki Attack, Issues Eviction Notice

**Imphal, Manipur –** Tensions are rising in Manipur following an alleged attack on a Liangmai Naga woman by members of the Kuki tribe. The incident, which occurred in K Lungwiram Naga village near Kangpokpi, has prompted the Konsakhul (Konsaram) Village Authority to issue a 15-day eviction notice to Kuki tenants residing on their land.

The woman, who was attempting to build a house on land claimed by the Naga village authority, reported being assaulted by approximately 30 Kuki men. Her brother alleges the attackers threatened to burn construction equipment, including a bulldozer. The woman claims her phone was broken and she was physically assaulted. A video circulating online appears to show a group of men confronting construction workers.

The Konsakhul Village Authority claims the Kukis were granted tenancy on the land, but that agreement has expired. The memorandum, sent to top Manipur officials including the chief secretary and state police chief, demands the Kukis vacate the land within 15 days or face forceful eviction. The authority cites “anti-social activities” and disregard for their “generosity and kindness” as reasons for the eviction.

In response to the attack, Liangmai Naga women have initiated an indefinite blockade of Makhan Gate, a major thoroughfare in the area. The Indigenous People’s Forum, a Naga civil society organisation, has condemned the violence, calling for immediate action from authorities and assurances of safety for Naga villagers. They described the attack as a “heinous act” highlighting a disregard for peace and mutual respect.

No Kuki organization has yet commented publicly on the incident. This latest clash follows a December incident where Naga students were allegedly assaulted by Kuki volunteers, an issue that was later resolved through mediation. The current situation underscores the ongoing tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur.
