Thu Jan 09 16:50:10 UTC 2025: ## Devastating Wildfires Rage Across Los Angeles, Leaving Two Dead and Thousands Displaced

**Los Angeles, CA –** A series of raging wildfires have engulfed parts of Los Angeles, forcing the evacuation of over 70,000 people and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The fires, which began on Tuesday, January 7th, have already claimed two lives and destroyed over 1,000 structures.

The Pacific Palisades area has been particularly hard hit, with over 5,000 acres scorched. This affluent area, home to many celebrities from the film, television, and music industries, is located between Santa Monica and Malibu. Another major fire in Altadena, near Pasadena, has consumed more than 2,000 acres. A third fire in Sylmar, in the San Fernando Valley, has burned over 500 acres.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated that strong winds are significantly hampering firefighting efforts, causing the fires to spread rapidly. He also confirmed numerous serious injuries in addition to the fatalities. The thick smoke has created hazardous air quality conditions, making breathing difficult for residents.

The White House has issued a statement confirming that President Biden is in contact with California Governor Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Bass, and various response teams to coordinate relief efforts. Five large US Forest Service air tankers are being deployed, along with 10 firefighting helicopters.

Incoming President Donald Trump has criticized the administration’s handling of the disaster, claiming it could be the most expensive wildfire in US history and questioning the insurance industry’s ability to cover the damages. He attributed the situation to what he called President Biden’s “gross incompetence and mismanagement.” The extent of the economic damage is still being assessed.
