**Thrissur, Kerala –** Renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran passed away on Thursday at the age of 80 at a private hospital in Thrissur. The acclaimed singer, affectionately known as “bhaavagayakan” (soulful singer) in Malayalam, leaves behind a legacy spanning nearly six decades and an impressive repertoire of approximately 15,000 songs in five languages: Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi.

Jayachandran’s career began in 1966 with the film *Kalithozhan*, though his recording for *Kunjali Marakkar* predates this. His mastery of classical music and emotive delivery earned him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1985, along with five Kerala State Awards, four Tamil Nadu State Awards, and the prestigious JC Daniel Award in 2020.

His collaborations with leading music composers such as G Devarajan, Ilaiyaraaja, and A.R. Rahman cemented his status as a versatile and sought-after artist. His contribution to A.R. Rahman’s Hindi film *Ada…A Way of Life* showcased his range beyond South Indian cinema.
