Wed Jan 08 19:53:28 UTC 2025: ## Delhi to Get India’s First Commercial-Scale Battery Energy Storage System
**New Delhi, January 9, 2025** – India’s first commercial utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) is set to launch in Delhi this March. The 20 MW/40 MWh system, located in Kilokri village, will provide four hours of daily power to over 12,000 low-income consumers, improving power quality and reliability.
The project, a joint venture between BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd. and the Delhi government, is funded primarily by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) with a total investment of $14 million (approximately ₹120 crore). The batteries, sourced from China, are already tested and ready for installation. A 15-day testing period is scheduled for early March before the system goes live.
The system’s batteries will be charged using renewable energy sources through BSES Rajdhani’s power purchase agreements. The project aligns with the Indian government’s ambitious goal of deploying 47 GW of BESS by 2032 and GEAPP’s target of 1 GW of BESS commitments in India by 2026. The initiative comes amidst the central government’s increasing push for renewable energy projects to incorporate battery storage, with recent policies offering significant funding for such ventures.
