Thu Jan 09 16:24:40 UTC 2025: ## No Immediate EU/EEA Threat From China’s Respiratory Virus Surge, ECDC Says

**Brussels, Belgium** – A recent surge in respiratory viral infections, including human metapneumovirus (hMPV), in northern China has prompted monitoring by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). While the Chinese CDC reported a sharp increase since December 2024, the ECDC stresses that the current situation does not pose a specific threat to the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA).

The ECDC acknowledges increased respiratory virus activity in the EU/EEA, particularly influenza, but emphasizes this aligns with typical seasonal patterns. hMPV, while also circulating in the EU/EEA, typically causes mild illness, though it can be severe in vulnerable groups like young children and the elderly. Currently, there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for hMPV.

The ECDC’s assessment is that China’s surge reflects a typical seasonal increase in common respiratory pathogens. The agency is collaborating with the Chinese CDC and WHO/EURO to gather further information and continues to monitor the situation.

Despite the low risk assessment, the ECDC recommends EU/EEA Member States prepare for increased respiratory virus cases this winter. They advise implementing infection prevention and control measures, particularly in healthcare settings and long-term care facilities, to minimize transmission. The agency also highlights the importance of seasonal influenza vaccination.
