Thu Jan 09 09:09:54 UTC 2025: ## India Detects Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases Amidst China Outbreak

**New Delhi, India** – India has confirmed eight cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms, following a surge in cases in China. The first reported cases were two infants, an eight-month-old and a three-month-old, in Bengaluru. While HMPV is not new, its emergence alongside other respiratory viruses like influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19 in China has raised concerns. Social media reports indicate overwhelmed hospitals in China dealing with a significant increase in respiratory illnesses.

HMPV, discovered in 2001, affects people of all ages, but young children (under 5), older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are most vulnerable. Symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, and sore throat, typically appearing three to six days after exposure. Severe cases may require hospitalization. The virus spreads through direct contact, contaminated surfaces, and respiratory droplets.

Currently, there is no vaccine for HMPV, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms. While similar to the common cold, initial HMPV infections can be more severe. To prevent infection, individuals are advised to practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, wearing masks when sick, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals. Those with pre-existing lung conditions should take extra precautions. Anyone experiencing worsening symptoms, such as severe cough or shortness of breath, should seek immediate medical attention.
