NEW DELHI (January 9, 2025) – Despite being Delhi’s first female Chief Minister from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Atishi is operating largely under the shadow of her predecessor, Arvind Kejriwal. Since assuming office last September, Atishi has consistently deferred to Kejriwal, both in public appearances and decision-making, leading to speculation about the party’s strategy.
While initially, Atishi’s symbolic gesture of sitting next to an empty chair representing Kejriwal suggested an independent approach, her subsequent actions tell a different story. She consistently walks behind Kejriwal, often addressing him as “sir” or “guru.” Sources within the AAP suggest this deference is a deliberate strategy to avoid overshadowing the party supremo. Others attribute it to Atishi’s inexperience as a first-time MLA.
This dynamic is evident in various instances. Atishi remained silent at a major party event, allowing other senior leaders to speak before Kejriwal. Press access to her was tightly controlled in her early days as CM. Even important government announcements are often made by Kejriwal, not Atishi, despite her official position. A recent example includes Kejriwal announcing a pension scheme passed by Atishi’s cabinet.
The AAP’s election strategy further underscores this power dynamic. At a recent event, Atishi herself introduced Kejriwal as the party’s “chief and beloved leader,” solidifying his central role despite no longer holding a cabinet position.
BJP MLA Vijender Gupta highlighted the situation in the Delhi Assembly, observing that despite Atishi’s official title, Kejriwal remains the dominant figure. While some within the AAP smile at this observation, it highlights a clear strategy to maintain Kejriwal’s authority ahead of upcoming elections. While Atishi holds the office of Chief Minister, all indications point to Kejriwal continuing to wield significant power behind the scenes.
