Tue Jan 07 14:30:00 UTC 2025: **7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibetan Plateau, Killing Dozens**
KATHMANDU, NEPAL – A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Tibetan Plateau near Mount Everest early Tuesday morning, killing at least 95 people and injuring 130 more, according to Chinese state media. The epicenter was located approximately 80 kilometers north of Everest, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake, which struck at 6:35 a.m. IST, caused widespread damage in Tingry County, Shigatse region of Tibet, flattening hundreds of homes. Tremors were felt as far away as Kathmandu, Thimphu (Bhutan), and Kolkata (India). Casualty figures from Nepal and other affected areas are still being assessed. China has closed tourist access to the region.
The earthquake’s impact is heightened by its location in the seismically active Lhasa terrane, a region containing the site of China’s massive new hydroelectric dam project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River (Brahmaputra). Concerns have been raised about the dam’s potential impact on the river’s flow and the downstream communities in India.
The Himalayan region, known as the “third pole” due to its vast water reserves, is vulnerable to seismic activity. Earthquakes can disrupt river courses, destabilize glaciers, and increase flood risks. The ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates continues to build tension, resulting in frequent seismic events. Geologists have been studying the region’s tectonic history to better predict future earthquakes. The Dalai Lama has issued a statement offering prayers for the victims. Further updates on the damage and casualties are expected.
