Tue Jan 07 16:54:05 UTC 2025: ## Sri Lankan President to Visit China Amidst Growing India Ties
**Colombo, Sri Lanka –** Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will embark on a four-day state visit to China from January 14th to 17th, the Cabinet Spokesman announced Tuesday. This marks his second state visit abroad since assuming office in September and follows a recent visit to India. The trip will focus on debt treatment and bilateral development cooperation.
President Dissanayake’s visit comes at a time of heightened diplomatic activity. His December visit to India strengthened bilateral ties, with India converting some loans into grants, totaling $780 million in assistance. Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha expressed optimism about the India-Sri Lanka partnership, highlighting the “renewed vigour” in their relationship. He confirmed that while India and Sri Lanka discussed concerns over Chinese research vessels during President Dissanayake’s visit, no further discussions have taken place since. President Dissanayake has assured India that Sri Lanka will not allow its territory to be used against India’s security interests.
Despite the strengthening India-Sri Lanka relationship, President Dissanayake’s upcoming visit to China highlights the complex geopolitical landscape. His party, the National People’s Power (NPP), has historical links to the pro-China Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). However, the NPP has pledged to maintain a non-aligned foreign policy, prioritizing Sri Lanka’s national interests. China is viewed by many Sri Lankans as a long-term ally. Interestingly, reports suggest China plans to restart maritime research activities near Sri Lanka, activities temporarily halted for unspecified reasons.
