**Chennai, January 7, 2025** – A heritage walk organized as part of LitForLife 2025 paid tribute to the late S. Muthiah, renowned chronicler of Chennai, focusing on his writings about Mount Road. The walk, conceived by writer and historian V. Sriram, traced Muthiah’s literary footprint along the iconic thoroughfare, visiting locations featured prominently in his works.
The journey began at the Munro statue, a subject of several of Muthiah’s writings, and continued to significant landmarks like Simpsons, the subject of Muthiah’s book “Getting India on the Move,” highlighting the company’s history and Chennai’s rise as an automotive hub. The walk also touched upon Government House, a building whose demolition deeply disappointed Muthiah, and *The Hindu* newspaper, where Muthiah penned his long-running “Madras Miscellany” column.
Other stops included the Round Tana, showcasing the city’s transformation as depicted in “Madras, Its Past and Present,” and several other buildings featured in Muthiah’s work, such as The Mail, P. Orr & Sons, Lawley Hall, Higginbothams, Bharat Insurance Building, and the now-lost Saraswathi Stores. The walk concluded at Club House Road, highlighting Muthiah’s books on the Madras Club, Spencers, and the Connemara Hotel. Sriram described the walk as an emotional and fulfilling exercise, showcasing Muthiah’s enduring legacy in documenting Chennai’s rich history and culture.
