Wed Jan 08 01:40:13 UTC 2025: ## Nagpur Reports Two Cases of HMPV Virus

**Nagpur, Maharashtra, January 7, 2025** – Two cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra, marking the fourth state in India to confirm infections. The affected individuals, a seven-year-old child and a 13-year-old child, both presented with symptoms of cough and fever and tested positive for HMPV on January 3rd, 2025. They are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The Maharashtra government has alerted health officials to remain vigilant and take immediate action. India has now seen a total of at least seven confirmed HMPV cases across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. While the central government assures the situation is not expected to escalate to a COVID-19-like crisis, the increasing number of cases is prompting closer monitoring.

Earlier reports confirmed two cases in Bangalore (a three-year-old and an eight-month-old) and one in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Bangalore cases were confirmed on January 6th, 2025, at Baptist Hospital. Both children had previously contracted bronchopneumonia, and neither had recently travelled internationally. Another case was reported in Rajasthan in December 2024.

HMPV, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, is causing concern despite reassurances from the government that the situation is under control. Health officials are actively monitoring the situation and taking necessary preventative measures.
