Tue Jan 07 19:01:40 UTC 2025: **HMPV Virus Cases Rise in India, But Experts Downplay Pandemic Fears**

NEW DELHI – A rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India has sparked concern, following a recent outbreak in China. Five cases were reported on Monday alone – two each in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and one in Gujarat. All affected individuals are young children.

HMPV is a globally recognized respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. While typically affecting the upper respiratory system, it can sometimes lead to lower respiratory infections. The virus spreads through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Most individuals recover within three to six days, although recovery time depends on the severity of the infection. Children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.

Although the current situation mirrors the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in China, with reports of overcrowded hospitals and crematoriums, Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar, a former scientist at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), stated that there is no need for excessive alarm in India. He emphasized that HMPV has always been present in the country but is now being more readily detected. He further clarified that the virus, while more prevalent during winter months, is not typically fatal. No global studies have reported HMPV-related deaths.

While HMPV can cause serious illness requiring hospitalization in some cases, leading to conditions such as bronchiolitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia, experts stress that it is not a cause for widespread panic. The virus is considered similar to a common cold virus, affecting both children and adults.
