Tue Jan 07 14:52:39 UTC 2025: ## Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Resigns After Nine Years

**OTTAWA, January 7, 2025** – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on January 6th, bringing an end to his nine-year tenure. The decision follows growing public dissatisfaction with his leadership and the recent, abrupt resignation of his Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland.

Trudeau, son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, ascended to power in 2015, ending a decade of Conservative rule. His leadership was marked by progressive policies including the legalization of cannabis, efforts to promote gender equality within his cabinet, and a robust response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also championed immigration at a time of rising global restrictions.

However, in recent years, Trudeau’s popularity waned amidst concerns over rising costs of living, particularly housing and food, and a surge in immigration. Freeland’s resignation, citing disagreements over economic policy in the face of threats from US President-elect Donald Trump, further exacerbated the pressure on Trudeau. Strained relations with India over the Khalistan issue also contributed to his declining approval ratings. Trudeau’s government faced accusations from India regarding alleged support for Khalistani extremists, while Trudeau himself accused Indian intelligence agencies of involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen and Khalistani separatist.

Trudeau will remain as caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen before the scheduled national elections in October 2025. The Liberal Party will now begin the process of selecting a new leader.
