Tue Jan 07 17:40:00 IST 2025: ## Kansas Highways Reopen After Blizzard, But Hazardous Conditions Persist
**TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)** – Major Kansas highways, including portions of I-70, reopened Monday morning following a weekend blizzard that shut down the state’s northeast corner. However, travel remains treacherous as many roads remain closed or are snow and ice-packed, prompting authorities to urge drivers to stay off the roads.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) reopened I-70 between Topeka and west of Hays by 9 a.m. Monday, along with several highways in the northeast. However, numerous roads remain closed due to blowing and drifting snow, including portions of K-4, Highway 40, and K-30. KDOT closed all highways in northeast Kansas on Sunday evening as heavy snowfall and high winds intensified.
Emergency alerts were issued Sunday evening and again Monday morning advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel. KDOT Topeka Superintendent Dave Studebaker explained that crews need clear roads to effectively clear snow and apply de-icing materials, noting that stranded vehicles have hampered their efforts. While Studebaker anticipates conditions to improve by midday Monday, KDOT strongly advises against travel unless absolutely necessary. Drivers are urged to check KanDrive.gov for the latest road closure information before venturing out.
