Tue Jan 07 11:32:04 UTC 2025: **UGC Eases Eligibility Criteria for NET Exam and Assistant Professor Positions**

NEW DELHI — The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced significant changes to the eligibility criteria for the National Eligibility Test (NET) and Assistant Professor positions in Indian colleges and universities. A new draft guideline, released in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, removes the requirement that candidates must have studied the same subject at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels to be eligible for the NET exam. Candidates can now take the NET exam in a subject of their choice, regardless of their previous academic background.

Furthermore, the UGC has relaxed the requirements for becoming an Assistant Professor. Candidates can now qualify for the position with either a UGC NET qualification or a PhD, eliminating the previous requirement for a PhD and matching undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the same subject. However, a PhD will remain mandatory for promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. State-level eligibility tests will continue to apply for Assistant Professor positions in state universities.

The UGC has urged candidates to visit its official website for detailed information and to review the draft guidelines. The changes are expected to broaden access to higher education and academic positions.
