**NEW DELHI:** A political firestorm has erupted in Delhi following claims by Chief Minister Atishi that she was evicted from her official residence for a second time in three months. However, sources within the Public Works Department (PWD) strongly refute this, stating that she never actually took possession of the bungalow at 6, Flag Staff Road.
Atishi, addressing a press conference following the announcement of Delhi Assembly election dates (February 5th), accused the BJP-led central government of orchestrating her eviction, alleging her belongings were “thrown out on the road.” She framed the action as a politically motivated attack aimed at hindering her work for the people of Delhi. She vowed to continue her efforts despite the alleged harassment.
The PWD counters Atishi’s narrative, asserting that she failed to take possession of the residence within the stipulated one-week timeframe, despite being allotted the property three months ago. They further claim this delay was a deliberate attempt to obstruct an ongoing CBI and ED investigation into alleged irregularities – and cost overruns – in the bungalow’s renovation, dubbed “Sheeshmahal” by the BJP. The PWD also confirmed that Atishi already has another official residence allotted to her and has been offered three additional options.
The BJP has seized on the “Sheeshmahal” controversy, highlighting alleged massive cost overruns in the renovation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah also criticizing the AAP government. The AAP defends the renovation, citing the building’s age and the necessity for upgrades, attributing the recommendations for the changes to the PWD itself.
AAP leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has accused the BJP of engaging in “dirty politics,” asserting that the evictions are a sign of the BJP’s desperation ahead of the upcoming elections. The “Sheeshmahal” issue is expected to remain a central point of contention in the Delhi election campaign.
