**PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN –** The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government in northwest Pakistan has imposed a two-month curfew in Kurram district following an attack on a government convoy. The attack, which injured Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud and seven others on Saturday, January 4th, violated a recently brokered peace agreement between warring tribes.
Section 144, prohibiting the display of arms and gatherings of five or more people, was implemented Sunday, January 5th, following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. Public gatherings and rallies on the main Parachinar highway are also banned.
The attack occurred days after a peace agreement ended clashes between the Alizai and Bagan tribes, which resulted in 133 deaths between November 21st and December 2nd. Authorities have identified the attackers and registered cases against them, as well as five alleged facilitators. Bounties will be offered for information leading to their arrest, and authorities will collaborate with tribal elders to apprehend the culprits. The injured Deputy Commissioner was reviewing arrangements for an aid convoy at the time of the attack, which has since been halted. The government aims to restore peace and order to the violence-stricken region through these measures.
