Tue Jan 07 08:00:40 UTC 2025: ## Kerala MLA Defects to Opposition, Seeking UDF Support

**Malappuram, Kerala, January 7, 2025** – P.V. Anvar, an independent MLA from Nilambur who recently left the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), has pledged unconditional support to the United Democratic Front (UDF) opposition in Kerala. Anvar, speaking in Malappuram on Tuesday, called for the defeat of the CPI(M) and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, asserting that Kerala needs the UDF’s return to power.

Anvar’s defection follows his arrest on Sunday in connection with an attack on a local forest office. He expressed gratitude to several UDF leaders for their support during his arrest. His visit to Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal further solidified his move towards the UDF. While Thangal expressed sympathy for Anvar’s concerns regarding forest law amendments and the plight of those living in hilly areas, he remained non-committal about Anvar formally joining the UDF, stating that the matter would be discussed by the coalition. Anvar himself avoided direct political discussion following the meeting.

The move adds a significant dynamic to Kerala’s political landscape as the state gears up for the 2026 elections. The UDF’s response to Anvar’s offer of support will be closely watched in the coming days.
