**New Delhi, India** – India’s health ministry has confirmed seven cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms. While the virus is circulating globally and the government assures there is no cause for widespread panic, officials are monitoring the situation closely following a recent outbreak in China.
HMPV typically presents with symptoms including cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath. While individuals of all ages can be infected, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness. According to Dr. Sharad Joshi, Director & HOD, Pulmonology and Paediatric Pulmonology at Max Healthcare, children under 6-7 years are most vulnerable due to their immature immune systems. He emphasized that while HMPV is common, causing mild illness in most cases, a small percentage may require hospitalization, potentially developing pneumonia requiring intensive care.
Dr. Joshi explained that first-time infections generally lead to more severe symptoms in young children due to the increased stress on their immune systems. Subsequent infections usually result in milder symptoms. Currently, there is no vaccine for HMPV, but preventative measures such as hand hygiene, social distancing, and mask-wearing are recommended. Treatment focuses on supportive care to manage symptoms, including hydration and multivitamins.
The health ministry stresses that this information is for general awareness and urges individuals to consult medical professionals for diagnosis and treatment.
